Recipe for Pepper and Gorgonzola Puff Pastry Bites (Sfogliatine Peperoni e Gorgonzola)

Category: Appetizers
Servings: 9 pieces

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Puff Pastry 230g
Green Peppers 2
Gorgonzola Cheese 150g
Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3 tbsp
Fine Salt To taste
Black Pepper To taste
Egg 1

Instructions

  1. Prepare the peppers: Start by washing the green peppers thoroughly. Cut off the tops and remove the seeds. Slice the peppers into approximately 1 cm thick slices, and then cut these slices into smaller pieces.

  2. Cook the peppers: Heat 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add a garlic clove (optional) to infuse the oil with flavor. Once the garlic is golden, remove it from the pan. Add the chopped green peppers and sauté them for about one minute. Season with fine salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the pan and let the peppers cook for approximately five minutes, stirring occasionally for even cooking.

  3. Prepare the puff pastry: Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a clean surface. Slice the pastry vertically into 6 strips and then horizontally into 3 sections, resulting in 18 small rectangular pieces of pastry.

  4. Assemble the sfogliatine: Take a teaspoon of gorgonzola cheese and place it in the center of each pastry rectangle. Add a few pieces of the sautéed pepper mixture on top of the cheese. Carefully fold the pastry over to seal the edges tightly, pressing them gently with your fingers.

  5. Prepare the egg wash: In a small bowl, crack the egg and beat it with a pinch of salt. Brush the tops of each pastry with the egg wash to ensure they turn golden and crispy during baking.

  6. Bake the sfogliatine: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the prepared puff pastry bites on it. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F), and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the pastries are golden and puffed up.

  7. Serve: Once baked, remove the sfogliatine from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. These savory appetizers are perfect for any gathering or as a delightful snack!

Tips:

  • You can substitute the green peppers with red or yellow peppers for a different flavor profile.
  • For an extra touch of richness, sprinkle a bit of grated Parmesan on top before baking.
  • Feel free to experiment with other cheeses, such as goat cheese or mascarpone, to suit your taste.

These Pepper and Gorgonzola Puff Pastry Bites are a deliciously savory treat that will surely impress your guests with their combination of creamy gorgonzola and tender, flavorful peppers wrapped in a crispy golden puff pastry.
