Crazy Mary’s Chili Recipe
Description:
This chili is a quick, easy, and flavorful dish that’s perfect for a cozy family dinner, especially on those busy middle-of-the-week evenings. Originally featured in Bon Appetit back in December 1983, this recipe was inspired by the delicious chili served at Grandma’s Saloon & Deli in Duluth, Minnesota. Not too spicy, it’s suitable for the whole family and pairs wonderfully with some sliced sourdough bread and a crisp salad.

Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/4 cup margarine
- 2 onions, chopped
- 1 celery stalk, chopped
- 1 can crushed tomatoes
- 1 can diced tomatoes in tomato puree
- 2 cups water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cans canned kidney beans
- Shredded Cheddar cheese, for serving
- Sour cream, for serving (optional)
- 1 lb ground beef
Instructions:
-
Begin by combining the chili powder, salt, and pepper in a cup, setting the mixture aside for later use.
-
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
-
Add the chopped mushrooms, onions, and celery to the saucepan, cooking and stirring occasionally until the onions become transparent, which should take approximately 10 minutes.
-
Next, add the ground beef and about 1/4 of the chili powder mixture to the saucepan. Cook the beef, breaking it up with a fork, until it’s nicely browned.
-
Stir in the remaining chili powder mixture, along with the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes in tomato puree, water, sugar, and Worcestershire sauce.
-
Cover the saucepan partially and allow the chili to simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
-
After 15 minutes, add the canned kidney beans to the chili and continue to simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
-
Once the chili is ready, ladle it into broiler-proof serving bowls.
-
Sprinkle each serving generously with shredded Cheddar cheese.
-
Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
If desired, top each serving with a dollop of sour cream before serving.
-
Serve the chili immediately, piping hot and full of flavor.
Enjoy your hearty and delicious Crazy Mary’s Chili, perfect for satisfying those comfort food cravings any day of the week! 🌶️🍲
