Crazy Mary’s Chili Recipe

Description:
This chili is a quick, easy, and flavorful dish that’s perfect for a cozy family dinner, especially on those busy middle-of-the-week evenings. Originally featured in Bon Appetit back in December 1983, this recipe was inspired by the delicious chili served at Grandma’s Saloon & Deli in Duluth, Minnesota. Not too spicy, it’s suitable for the whole family and pairs wonderfully with some sliced sourdough bread and a crisp salad.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can diced tomatoes in tomato puree
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cans canned kidney beans
  • Shredded Cheddar cheese, for serving
  • Sour cream, for serving (optional)
  • 1 lb ground beef

Instructions:

  1. Begin by combining the chili powder, salt, and pepper in a cup, setting the mixture aside for later use.

  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

  3. Add the chopped mushrooms, onions, and celery to the saucepan, cooking and stirring occasionally until the onions become transparent, which should take approximately 10 minutes.

  4. Next, add the ground beef and about 1/4 of the chili powder mixture to the saucepan. Cook the beef, breaking it up with a fork, until it’s nicely browned.

  5. Stir in the remaining chili powder mixture, along with the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes in tomato puree, water, sugar, and Worcestershire sauce.

  6. Cover the saucepan partially and allow the chili to simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

  7. After 15 minutes, add the canned kidney beans to the chili and continue to simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

  8. Once the chili is ready, ladle it into broiler-proof serving bowls.

  9. Sprinkle each serving generously with shredded Cheddar cheese.

  10. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  11. If desired, top each serving with a dollop of sour cream before serving.

  12. Serve the chili immediately, piping hot and full of flavor.

Enjoy your hearty and delicious Crazy Mary’s Chili, perfect for satisfying those comfort food cravings any day of the week! 🌶️🍲
