- 1 clove garlic
- 2 thumb-sized pieces of turmeric
- 1 teaspoon salt
-
For Basting:
- 2 shallots
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4-6 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Marinade:
- In a blender, combine the garlic, turmeric, and salt to create a smooth paste.
- Rub this paste generously over the cleaned mujaer fish.
- Cover the fish and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to infuse deeply into the fish.
-
Prepare the Basting Sauce:
- Blend the shallots, garlic, and ginger into a smooth paste.
- In a bowl, mix this paste with salt, soy sauce, and vegetable oil to create the basting sauce.
-
Grill the Mujaer:
- Preheat your grill to medium heat.
- Remove the fish from the refrigerator and brush it with the prepared basting sauce.
- Grill the fish, turning occasionally and basting with more sauce as it cooks. Grill until the fish is fully cooked and has a deliciously crispy exterior, which should take about 10-15 minutes depending on the heat of the grill.
-
Serve:
- Once grilled to perfection, serve the mujaer hot with a side of fresh sambal and steamed rice.
- For a traditional touch, you might want to serve it with a side of sambal mentah (raw sambal) and some fresh vegetables. The combination will make your meal incredibly satisfying and a sure hit at the dining table.
Enjoy this flavorful and easy-to-make grilled mujaer, which is perfect for a casual family meal or a special gathering. Happy cooking!
