Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup yellow moong dal
- 1 onion
- 6 cloves garlic
- 1/2 tsp ginger powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/3 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- Salt, to taste
- 2 cups water
- Coriander leaves, for garnish
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Instructions:
-
Begin by washing the moong dal thoroughly. Place the dal in a pressure cooker with water as needed. Cook it for 2 whistles and allow the pressure to release automatically. Open the cooker and use a hand blender to blend the dal until smooth. Set aside.
-
Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add finely chopped onion and garlic, cooking them until the onion softens and turns translucent.
-
Add the blended dal to the pan along with 2 cups of water. Stir in salt, turmeric powder, ginger powder, red chili powder, and black pepper powder. Mix everything well and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Once the soup is cooked, turn off the heat and add lemon juice. Set the soup aside.
-
For the tempering, heat 1 tsp coconut oil in a small tempering pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Once done, remove from heat and pour the tempering into the dal shorba.
-
Garnish the soup with fresh coriander leaves, and optionally, add a swirl of cream and a sprinkle of cumin seeds for extra flavor.
Serve the Dal Shorba hot, enjoy this hearty soup as a comforting appetizer, and savor its delightful flavors!
Tips:
- You can adjust the spice level by modifying the amount of red chili powder and black pepper.
- For a creamier texture, blend the dal thoroughly before adding water.
