This healthy and flavorful Dal Shorba (Lentil Soup) is a perfect appetizer for any meal, especially during winter. Rich in protein and easy to prepare, this soup will warm you up while being tasty and nutritious.

Cuisine: North Indian
Course: Appetizer
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1 onion
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/3 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 cups water
  • Coriander leaves, for garnish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Begin by washing the moong dal thoroughly. Place the dal in a pressure cooker with water as needed. Cook it for 2 whistles and allow the pressure to release automatically. Open the cooker and use a hand blender to blend the dal until smooth. Set aside.

  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add finely chopped onion and garlic, cooking them until the onion softens and turns translucent.

  3. Add the blended dal to the pan along with 2 cups of water. Stir in salt, turmeric powder, ginger powder, red chili powder, and black pepper powder. Mix everything well and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Once the soup is cooked, turn off the heat and add lemon juice. Set the soup aside.

  5. For the tempering, heat 1 tsp coconut oil in a small tempering pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Once done, remove from heat and pour the tempering into the dal shorba.

  6. Garnish the soup with fresh coriander leaves, and optionally, add a swirl of cream and a sprinkle of cumin seeds for extra flavor.

Serve the Dal Shorba hot, enjoy this hearty soup as a comforting appetizer, and savor its delightful flavors!

Tips:

  • You can adjust the spice level by modifying the amount of red chili powder and black pepper.
  • For a creamier texture, blend the dal thoroughly before adding water.
