Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Begin by washing and soaking the rice and moong dal together in water for about 1 to 2 hours. Once soaked, drain the water and set the ingredients aside for cooking.

  2. Cooking the Khichdi:
You can choose to cook the khichdi in either a pressure cooker or a saucepan.

    • For a pressure cooker, add the soaked rice and moong dal along with the green chili, ginger, turmeric powder, asafoetida, black peppercorns, cinnamon stick, and salt into the cooker.
    • Pour in 2-1/2 cups of water, then close the lid and place the weight on top.
    • Cook on high heat for 2 whistles. After that, reduce the heat to low and allow the khichdi to simmer for 3 more minutes.
    • Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  3. Finishing Touches:
Once the pressure has been released, open the cooker. You’ll notice that the rice and dal have become soft and have a mushy texture. Stir the khichdi gently to mix all the ingredients, ensuring that the flavors meld together.

  4. Serve:
Spoon the Green Moong Dal Khichdi onto plates. For added richness and flavor, drizzle a teaspoon of ghee over the top. Serve it hot alongside Batata Nu Shaak (Potatoes in Gravy) or Kadhi Pakora for a wholesome, satisfying meal.

This Green Moong Dal Khichdi is a perfect meal for a busy weeknight dinner, offering both comfort and nutrition. The simplicity of the dish, combined with its easy-to-find ingredients and quick cooking method, makes it a go-to choice when you’re craving something healthy and flavorful. Whether you pair it with a vegetable curry or a tangy yogurt dish like Kadhi Pakora, this khichdi is sure to be a hit at your dinner table.
