Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Green moong dal (soaked) 1/2 cup (soaked for 4 hours)
Lemon juice 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida 1/4 tsp
Black pepper powder 1/2 tsp
Ghee 1 tsp
Cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
Salt To taste

Preparation Time:

10 minutes

Cooking Time:

30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Soak the Moong Dal:
Begin by soaking the green moong dal in water for 3 to 4 hours. This will soften the beans and reduce cooking time.

  2. Cook the Moong Dal:
After soaking, place the moong dal in a pressure cooker. Add enough water to cover the dal. Close the cooker and cook the dal on medium-high heat, allowing it to whistle 2 to 3 times. Once the pressure cooker has finished whistling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for another 10 minutes on low flame. Turn off the gas and allow the pressure to release naturally.

  3. Puree the Dal:
Open the pressure cooker and give the cooked moong dal a good stir. Allow it to cool down slightly. Once cooled, transfer the dal into a blender. Add 2 cups of water to the dal and blend until it forms a smooth, creamy puree.

  4. Prepare the Tadka (Tempering):
In a small pan (tadka pan), heat the ghee on medium heat. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds. Allow them to crackle and release their fragrance.

  5. Combine the Tadka with the Puree:
Add the blended moong dal puree into the pan with the cumin seeds. To this, add asafoetida, black pepper powder, and salt to taste. Stir the mixture well and let it boil for 2 to 3 minutes. This step infuses the soup with rich flavors and enhances its taste.

  6. Serve:
Once the Moong Pani has boiled and reached the desired consistency, turn off the heat. Ladle the soup into bowls and serve hot.

Serving Suggestions:
Moong Pani is a perfect appetizer or light meal, especially when you’re feeling under the weather. The soothing properties of this soup make it an excellent choice for those battling a cough or cold. Pair it with some fresh lemon juice or a sprinkle of chopped cilantro for added flavor.
