- 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
- 1 tsp whole black pepper, ground
- 1 sprig curry leaves
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Instructions:
-
Prepare the moong dal: Wash the yellow moong dal thoroughly. Place it in a pressure cooker with 3/4 cup water. Close the cooker and cook for 1 whistle. After the first whistle, reduce the heat and let it cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally. Set the dal aside.
-
Cook the oats: Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan. Add the oats and sauté until they turn light brown. Pour in 3/4 cup water, cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, and let the oats soften.
-
Combine oats and moong dal: Once the oats are cooked, add the prepared moong dal and salt to the pan. Stir well, cover, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for 2 more minutes.
-
Prepare the tempering: In a small pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee. Add the cashew nuts and cook until they turn golden brown. Then, add the chopped ginger, ground black pepper, curry leaves, and asafoetida. Sauté for a few seconds, then turn off the heat.
-
Combine the tempering with oats: Pour the prepared tempering over the cooked oats and moong dal mixture. Stir everything together to combine the flavors.
-
Serve: Serve the Oats Ven Pongal hot with coconut chutney and filter coffee for a traditional South Indian breakfast experience.
