Indonesian Beef Soup (Sop Daging Sapi)

This Indonesian Beef Soup, known locally as Sop Daging Sapi, is a hearty and flavorful dish that features tender beef ribs simmered with aromatic spices and vegetables. Perfect for a comforting meal, this recipe combines robust flavors with simple ingredients to create a delicious, warming soup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg beef ribs (Iga Sapi)
  • 2 local carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 1 potato, peeled and diced
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 nutmeg
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Water
  • 2 stalks of green onions (Daun Bawang), sliced
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Spice Blend: In a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder, finely grind the black pepper, cardamom pods, nutmeg, and garlic cloves. This aromatic spice blend will serve as the base of your soup.

  2. Cook the Beef Ribs: In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the beef ribs along with the freshly ground spice blend. Also, include the cloves, cinnamon stick, and salt. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the beef is tender, which typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.

  3. Add Vegetables: Once the beef is tender, add the sliced carrots to the pot. Allow them to cook for a few minutes until they start to soften. Then, add the diced potatoes and sliced green onions. Continue cooking until the potatoes are tender and the flavors are well combined.

  4. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or pepper to suit your preference.

  5. Serve: Remove the pot from heat. Ladle the soup into bowls and serve hot, garnished with additional green onions if desired.

This recipe offers a delightful combination of savory beef, aromatic spices, and fresh vegetables, making it a perfect dish to warm up any day. Enjoy your homemade Indonesian Beef Soup, a comforting treat that’s as nutritious as it is delicious.
