Black Grape Jam Recipe
Category: Jams & Preserves
Serves: 2 jars (300g each)

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Black grapes 1 kg
Sugar 300 g

Instructions

  1. Prepare the jars: Before you begin, ensure that your jars are sanitized. Follow the guidelines provided by your local health authorities to ensure proper sterilization.

  2. Prepare the grapes: Start by separating the grapes from the vine. Rinse them thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or residue. After draining, use a small knife to cut open each grape and remove the seeds. This process can be a bit time-consuming, but it’s essential for a smooth jam.

  3. Cook the grapes: Place the prepared grapes into a large saucepan. Over medium heat, cook the grapes for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The heat will help break down the grapes and release their juices, so make sure to monitor the process.

  4. Extract the juice: Once the grapes have softened and broken down, remove the saucepan from the heat. Pass the mixture through a food mill or fine strainer to extract the juice and some pulp, leaving behind any remaining skins and seeds.

  5. Add sugar: Return the juice and pulp to the saucepan. Stir in the sugar, and cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Allow it to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency.

  6. Jar the jam: While the jam is still hot, carefully pour it into your sanitized jars. An easy way to do this is by using a funnel for precision. Be cautious as the jam will be very hot! Once filled, close the jars tightly with new lids.

  7. Seal and store: Allow the jars to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, store them in a cool, dark place. For long-term storage, you can also process the jars in a hot water bath to create a vacuum seal, extending their shelf life.

This simple yet delicious Black Grape Jam is perfect for spreading on toast, pairing with cheeses, or even as a topping for desserts. The natural sweetness of the grapes, combined with the rich jammy texture, creates a delightful treat you can enjoy all year long.

Tips:

  • Ensure you have fresh, new lids for sealing the jars to avoid any risk of contamination.
  • If you prefer a smoother jam, you can pass the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove any remaining pulp.
