Description
This Chunky Tomato Salsa is a simple yet delicious dip that has become a family favorite. After I made it for a family gathering, my brother and sister couldn’t stop eating it, and now I’m always asked to bring it to every family event. I use my brother’s organic tomatoes when in season, but during the colder months, I substitute with canned petite diced tomatoes. I prefer to leave the skins and seeds on the tomatoes for added texture and freshness. Plus, I hand chop everything to maintain that chunky and homemade feel. Serve it with tortilla chips, or use it as a topping for tacos, grilled meats, or even salads.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Tomatoes (diced, with skins and seeds) 2 1/4 – 2 1/2 cups
Onion (finely chopped) 3/4 cup

Garlic Powder 1/4 teaspoon
Sugar 1/4 teaspoon
Tamari (or soy sauce) 1 tablespoon
Soy Sauce (optional) 1/2 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the diced tomatoes, finely chopped onion, freshly squeezed lime juice, cilantro, garlic powder, sugar, tamari, soy sauce, ground cumin, and green chilies. Mix everything together gently to avoid breaking the tomatoes too much. You want to keep that chunky texture!

  2. Chill for flavor: Once everything is well mixed, cover the bowl and refrigerate the salsa for about an hour. This gives the flavors time to meld together, resulting in a more intense and flavorful salsa.

  3. Serve and enjoy: After chilling, give the salsa a quick stir before serving. It pairs perfectly with tortilla chips, but you can also enjoy it as a topping for tacos, grilled chicken, or even mixed into a salad. The possibilities are endless, so feel free to get creative with your pairings!

Tips and Variations:

  • For a spicier salsa: Add more green chilies or even a fresh jalapeño for extra heat.
  • Storage: This salsa can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, but it’s best served fresh.
  • Tomato options: Fresh garden tomatoes give this salsa a wonderful, rich flavor, but if you’re making it off-season, canned petite diced tomatoes work just as well for convenience.

Enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavors of this Chunky Tomato Salsa, and let it become a go-to favorite at your next gathering or family meal!
