Fig and Almond Jam Recipe
Category: Jams and Preserves
Servings: 1 jar

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Fresh figs 1 kg
Sugar 150 g
Lemon zest 1 lemon
Sliced almonds 40 g

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Figs: Begin by peeling the fresh figs. Once done, transfer them into a heavy-bottomed saucepan. This will help prevent any burning or sticking during cooking.

  2. Add the Other Ingredients: To the figs in the saucepan, add the zest of 1 lemon and the sugar. Gently mix everything together, ensuring that the figs and sugar are well combined. Be careful not to crush the figs at this stage.

  3. Let it Rest: Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and allow the figs to macerate for about an hour. This will help the figs release their juices and soften.

  4. Sterilize the Jars: While the figs are macerating, take this time to sterilize the jars you’ll use for storing the jam. Follow the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health for safe jar sterilization to ensure your jam stays fresh and safe.

  5. Cook the Jam: After the figs have rested for an hour, remove the plastic wrap. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Allow it to cook, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. As the jam thickens, check the temperature—you’re aiming for 105°C (220°F) to ensure the jam sets properly.

  6. Add Almonds: Once the jam has thickened and reached the desired temperature, remove it from the heat. Stir in the sliced almonds, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the jam.

  7. Final Mixing: Stir the mixture thoroughly to combine the almonds with the fig jam. At this point, your fig and almond preserve should have a nice, thick consistency.

  8. Jar and Seal: Carefully pour the hot fig and almond jam into your sterilized jars. Seal them immediately while the jam is still hot to ensure a good vacuum seal. If you’re new to canning, ensure that the jars are properly sealed to prevent spoilage.

  9. Cool and Store: Let the jars cool at room temperature, then store them in a cool, dry place. Your fig and almond jam is now ready to enjoy whenever you crave a sweet, nutty spread!

This delightful fig and almond jam offers a wonderful balance of natural sweetness from the figs and a subtle crunch from the almonds, making it a perfect addition to your breakfast or as a topping for desserts. The lemon zest adds a refreshing tang that brightens up the rich, deep flavor of the figs. With this easy-to-follow recipe, you’ll create a homemade preserve that’s not only delicious but also a great gift idea for friends and family. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
