Savory Indonesian Beef Lapis Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 kg beef (sliced thinly, similar to beef jerky)
- 3 kaffir lime leaves
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 segment of galangal (about 2-3 cm)
- 1/2 nutmeg
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 liter water
- For the Spice Paste:
- 8 cloves garlic
- 10 candlenuts
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- 2 cm ginger
- 5 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 5 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon beef bouillon
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Beef: Slice the beef thinly, much like preparing beef jerky. Rinse the slices thoroughly and set them aside.
-
Make the Spice Paste: Blend together garlic, candlenuts, coriander, and ginger until smooth.
-
Cook the Beef: In a large pan or wok, combine the thinly sliced beef with the prepared spice paste, kaffir lime leaves, bay leaves, galangal, and nutmeg. Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, sweet soy sauce, salt, beef bouillon, and ground black pepper. Mix well to ensure the beef is evenly coated with the spices.
-
Simmer: Pour in 1 liter of water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the beef is tender. This can take some time—if the water evaporates before the beef is tender, simply add more water as needed.
-
Finish and Serve: Once the beef is tender and the flavors have melded together, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve the savory beef lapis hot, ideally with steamed rice or as a flavorful addition to other dishes.
Enjoy the rich and aromatic flavors of this traditional Indonesian beef lapis, perfect for a hearty meal or special occasion!
