Tongseng Sapi: Savory Indonesian Beef Stew
Ingredients:
- 1/4 pound beef or goat meat, cut into small pieces
- 1 small head of cabbage, sliced
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- A splash of soy sauce
- For the spice paste:
- 5 cloves garlic
- 6 bird’s eye chilies (adjust to taste)
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste

Instructions:
-
Prepare the Spice Paste: - Blend or grind the garlic and bird’s eye chilies until you have a smooth paste. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.

-
Cook the Spice Paste: - In a large pot or skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until fragrant and golden.

-
Add the Beef: - Incorporate the chopped beef into the pot with the sautéed spice paste. Stir well to coat the meat with the aromatic paste. Add a small amount of water to help the beef cook evenly.

-
Simmer the Beef: - Allow the beef to cook until it becomes tender and is cooked through. You may need to add a bit more water if the mixture gets too dry.

-
Add Vegetables: - Once the beef is cooked, add the sliced cabbage and chopped tomatoes to the pot. Pour in a splash of soy sauce for added flavor.

-
Finish Cooking: - Continue to cook until the cabbage is wilted and the tomatoes are soft, and the sauce has reduced to a desirable consistency.

-
Serve: - Your Tongseng Sapi is now ready to be enjoyed. Serve hot with steamed rice or as part of a larger meal.

This traditional Indonesian dish brings together tender beef, savory spices, and fresh vegetables in a rich, flavorful stew. Perfect for a comforting meal, Tongseng Sapi combines the warmth of spice with the heartiness of beef, making it a delightful addition to any table. Enjoy!
