Sapi Lada Hitam: Indonesian Black Pepper Beef

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg beef, thinly sliced
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 small bell peppers
  • 1 piece of ginger
  • 10 hot chili peppers
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 5 shallots
  • 1 packet of ground black pepper
  • 1 bottle of black pepper sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce
  • 1 packet of Royco seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 kaffir lime leaves
  • 2 cups water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Begin by slicing the beef into thin strips and washing it thoroughly. Set aside.

  2. Prepare the Vegetables and Aromatics: Slice the onions and bell peppers. Peel and finely chop the garlic, shallots, and ginger. If you prefer a spicier dish, adjust the amount of hot chili peppers to your taste.

  3. Make the Spice Paste: Combine the garlic, shallots, ginger, and ground black pepper in a mortar and pestle or food processor. Grind or blend until the mixture forms a smooth paste.

  4. Cook the Aromatics: Heat the cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until fragrant and golden brown.

  5. Simmer the Base: Add a little water to the pan to help release the flavors from the spice paste. Stir in the salt and Royco seasoning. Allow the mixture to simmer gently.

  6. Add the Beef: Once the base is fragrant, add the thinly sliced beef to the pan. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through.

  7. Flavor the Dish: Stir in the sweet soy sauce and black pepper sauce. Continue to cook, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  8. Incorporate the Vegetables: Add the sliced bell peppers, onions, and kaffir lime leaves to the pan. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender yet crisp.

  9. Final Adjustments: Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. The dish should be flavorful with a good balance of heat and sweetness.

  10. Serve: Remove from heat and transfer to a serving dish. This flavorful Sapi Lada Hitam pairs wonderfully with steamed rice.

Enjoy your delicious Indonesian Black Pepper Beef, a perfect blend of savory spices and tender beef that will delight your taste buds.
