Sempol Ayam Recipe: A Delightful Indonesian Chicken Skewer
Sempol Ayam, a savory and popular street food from Indonesia, is a delicious chicken skewer that’s perfect for snacking or serving at gatherings. With a blend of tender chicken fillet, aromatic spices, and fresh vegetables, this recipe is both flavorful and easy to make. Here’s how to create these delightful skewers from scratch.
Ingredients:
- 250 grams chicken breast fillet
- 3 cloves garlic
- 2 tablespoons fried shallots
- 4 tablespoons tapioca flour
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 carrot, grated
- 1 stalk green onion, finely chopped
- 1 stalk celery or celery leaves, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon chicken seasoning powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 egg (for the mixture)
- 1 egg (for coating)
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Mixture:
- Begin by finely chopping the chicken breast fillet. For a smoother texture, you can use a food processor to blend the chicken into a paste. Add the garlic cloves and continue blending until well combined.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the chicken paste with the fried shallots, tapioca flour, all-purpose flour, grated carrot, chopped green onion, and chopped celery. Mix thoroughly.
-
Season and Bind:
- Add salt, ground black pepper, chicken seasoning powder, and sugar to the mixture. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
- Crack one egg into the mixture and stir until the ingredients are fully combined and the mixture holds together.
-
Form the Skewers:
- Wet your hands with a little water or coat them lightly with flour to prevent sticking. Take a portion of the mixture and mold it onto skewers. Each skewer should be packed tightly and shaped into a cylindrical form.
- This recipe will yield approximately 20 skewers.
-
Cook the Skewers:
- Bring a pot of water to a boil. Gently add the skewers into the boiling water and cook until they float to the surface. This indicates that they are cooked through. Remove the skewers and let them drain on a plate.
-
Fry the Skewers:
- Beat the second egg in a bowl. Dip each cooked skewer into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated.
- Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the skewers until they turn golden brown and crispy.
-
Serve:
- Serve your Sempol Ayam hot, accompanied by mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, and sambal (chili sauce) for a delicious and satisfying snack or appetizer.
Enjoy this Indonesian classic, bursting with flavor and perfect for sharing with friends and family. Happy cooking!
