Sambel Goreng Tahu Tempe Krecek (Indonesian Stir-Fried Tofu, Tempeh, and Crispy Crackers)

Introduction:
Sambel Goreng Tahu Tempe Krecek is a savory, flavorful dish from Indonesia that combines three main ingredients: tofu, tempeh, and krecek (crispy crackers made from cow skin), all stir-fried with a rich blend of aromatics and seasonings. This dish is typically served with a generous drizzle of sweet soy sauce and oyster sauce, balanced by the heat of red chilies. It’s a perfect dish to serve over steamed rice, offering a wonderful combination of textures and tastes—crunchy, chewy, and tender—all in one bite.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Amount
Tempeh (fermented soy cake) 200g, cut into cubes
Tofu (firm) 200g, cut into cubes
Krecek (crispy crackers) 150g, soaked and drained
Onion (small) 1/2, thinly sliced
Garlic cloves 2, minced
Shallots 4, thinly sliced
Red chili (small) 5, sliced
Large red chili 1, sliced
Oyster sauce 1 tbsp
Sweet soy sauce (Kecap) 2 tbsp
Sugar 1 tbsp
Salt 1/2 tsp
Ground black pepper 1/4 tsp
MSG-free seasoning (optional) To taste
Water 2-3 tbsp
Cooking oil For frying

Instructions:

Step Instructions
1 Prepare the tofu and tempeh: Cut the tofu and tempeh into bite-sized cubes. Heat oil in a pan and fry them until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
2 Prepare the krecek: Boil the krecek in water for about 10 minutes to soften. Once softened, drain and chop into smaller pieces, then set aside.
3 Prepare the aromatics: Slice the small red chilies, large red chili, onion, shallots, and garlic finely.
4 Stir-fry the aromatics: Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the garlic, shallots, onions, and both small and large red chilies. Stir-fry until fragrant.
5 Combine the ingredients: Add the fried tofu, tempeh, and krecek to the pan. Stir well to combine the flavors.
6 Season the dish: Pour in the water, sweet soy sauce (kecap), oyster sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, and optional MSG-free seasoning. Mix everything well.
7 Simmer: Stir the ingredients occasionally and let the dish cook until the sauce reduces and thickens. If you prefer a saucier dish, you can leave a little more liquid.
8 Final taste check: Taste the sambel goreng and adjust the seasoning as needed. Once ready, serve hot over steamed rice or enjoy it as a side dish.

Serving Suggestions:
This hearty and flavorful dish pairs perfectly with steamed jasmine rice or as a side dish accompanying grilled meats, vegetables, or fried rice. Garnish with fresh herbs or fried shallots for extra texture and flavor.

Enjoy the vibrant flavors of Indonesian cuisine with this sambel goreng recipe!
