Stir-Fried Tofu, Tempeh, and Fish: A Delicious Indonesian Dish

This flavorful stir-fried dish, known as Tumis Tahu dan Tempe, is a beloved recipe in Indonesian cuisine, perfect for a simple and satisfying meal. With its combination of crispy tofu, tempeh, and fried fish, all coated in aromatic spices and a hint of sweetness, this dish offers a mouth-watering fusion of flavors and textures. Easy to prepare and versatile, it can also be adapted using eggs or other proteins to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Ingredients Amount
Tempeh (or eggs/fried fish) 1 board (cut into chunks or fried)
Tofu 2 large pieces (fried)
Fried fish (or optional) 1 fried mackerel (ikan tongkol)
For the spice mix
Red chili (sliced) 10 pieces
Bird’s eye chili (sliced) 5 pieces
Shallots (sliced) 5 pieces
Garlic (sliced) 3 cloves
Tomato (grated/blended) 1 medium-sized
Ginger (sliced) 1 cm
Lemongrass (crushed) 3 stalks
Palm sugar 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients
Begin by frying the tempeh until golden and crispy. If you prefer, you can also use eggs or fried fish as a substitute. Fry the tofu pieces until they are golden and crisp as well.

  2. Tumis the Aromatics
Heat a little oil in a pan. Add the sliced ginger and crushed lemongrass, sautéing them until fragrant and aromatic.

  3. Add the Onion and Garlic
Next, toss in the sliced shallots and garlic. Stir-fry them until they become fragrant and translucent.

  4. Spice It Up
Add the sliced red chili and bird’s eye chili to the mix, stirring well to incorporate the heat into the aromatics.

  5. Add Tomato and Sweetness
Stir in the grated or blended tomato along with the palm sugar. Add a splash of water to help the ingredients soften, and simmer the sauce until it thickens and the tomatoes start to wilt.

  6. Combine with Protein
Once the sauce is slightly thickened and aromatic, carefully add the fried tofu, tempeh, and fish (or eggs) to the pan. Stir gently to ensure that everything is well-coated with the spicy tomato sauce.

  7. Serve and Enjoy
Once everything is heated through and well-mixed, your Tumis Tahu dan Tempe is ready to serve! Enjoy this dish with steamed rice or on its own as a hearty meal.
