Tahu Kuah Kuning: A Simple and Flavorful Indonesian Delight

Ingredients:

  • 6 pieces of tofu, cut in half
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt, sugar, and seasoning to taste
  • For the Spice Paste:
    • 6 shallots
    • 3 cloves of garlic
    • 5 red chilies
    • 2 candlenuts
    • A pinch of turmeric
    • A pinch of kencur (aromatic ginger)
    • 1/2 tomato

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Cut the tofu into halves and rinse them thoroughly under cold water.

  2. Cook the Spice Paste: In a blender or food processor, combine the shallots, garlic, red chilies, candlenuts, turmeric, kencur, and tomato. Blend into a smooth paste.

  3. Sauté the Paste: Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until fragrant and the oil begins to separate from the paste.

  4. Simmer the Sauce: Add water and bay leaves to the pan with the sautéed paste. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  5. Add the Tofu: Once the sauce is boiling, gently add the tofu pieces. Season with salt, sugar, and seasoning to taste. Stir gently to ensure the tofu is well coated with the sauce.

  6. Cook: Allow the tofu to simmer in the sauce until it is heated through and the flavors are well combined, about 10-15 minutes.

  7. Serve: Remove from heat and transfer to a serving dish. Enjoy your Tahu Kuah Kuning warm with rice or as a side dish.

This simple yet flavorful Tahu Kuah Kuning is a staple in Indonesian cuisine, known for its aromatic spice paste and savory broth. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal!
