Easy Apple Strudel Coffee Cake

This delightful Easy Apple Strudel Coffee Cake is perfect for special occasions and brunches, particularly around Easter. The blend of flaky puff pastry with a creamy apple filling creates a show-stopping dish that will impress your guests. Although the classic version features a luscious apple filling, feel free to experiment with other fillings if you’re feeling adventurous. Note that the preparation time does not include thawing time for the puff pastry.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package frozen puff pastry (thawed)
  • 2 packages cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for cream cheese mixture)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 cup pecans (chopped)
  • 1 cup walnuts (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Additional granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions:

  1. Thaw the Puff Pastry:
Begin by thawing the puff pastry sheets for 30 minutes. This will make them easier to handle and work with.

  2. Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to preheat at 375°F (190°C). This ensures that your pastries will bake evenly and come out perfectly golden.

  3. Prepare the Cream Cheese Mixture:
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and the egg yolk. Beat together until the mixture is smooth and well incorporated. Set this aside.

  4. Prepare the Pastry Sheets:
On a lightly floured surface, unfold one sheet of thawed puff pastry. You will notice that each sheet has three distinct sections. Do not separate these sections but use a rolling pin to lightly roll the pastry, flattening it slightly.

  5. Make the Cuts:
Using a sharp knife, make 10 parallel cuts in each of the two outer sections of the pastry. Cut only up to the fold line, creating strips that will be folded over the filling later.

  6. Assemble the Pastry:
Spread half of the cream cheese mixture down the center section of the pastry. Arrange a layer of apple slices evenly over the cream cheese. Sprinkle half of the chopped pecans and walnuts on top of the apple slices, and dust lightly with cinnamon.

  7. Create the Braided Effect:
Starting at one end of the pastry, fold the strips over the filling at an angle, alternating sides to achieve a braided appearance. This will give your strudel its signature look.

  8. Prepare for Baking:
Brush the top of the assembled pastry with the reserved egg white to give it a beautiful, glossy finish. Sprinkle a bit of granulated sugar on top for extra sweetness and a touch of crunch.

  9. Bake the Pastry:
Carefully transfer the prepared pastries to a large, ungreased baking sheet using two long spatulas. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed.

  10. Serve:
Allow the pastries to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature for a delicious treat that’s sure to be a hit!

Notes:

  • The recipe yields 2 pastries, each serving approximately 10 people, making it ideal for large gatherings or family brunches.
  • If you decide to use a different filling, please share your creative variations!

Enjoy this scrumptious apple strudel coffee cake that combines the flaky texture of puff pastry with the rich, creamy filling of apples and nuts. Perfect for making your brunches memorable and delightful! 🌟🍏🥐
