Tahu Gejrot Recipe

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Fried Tahu 12 pieces
For the Sauce
Water 1 cup
Palm Sugar 100 grams
Tamarind (pure) 1 teaspoon
Salt a pinch
Sweet Soy Sauce a little
Red Onion 1 piece
Garlic 1 clove
Green Chili to taste
Salt a pinch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Once boiling, add the finely chopped palm sugar and stir until it dissolves completely. Next, mix in the tamarind; while many use tamarind water, pure tamarind enhances the flavor beautifully. Stir thoroughly, then add a pinch of salt and a drizzle of sweet soy sauce. Taste and adjust as needed, then let it cool.

  2. Prepare the Spice Mix: Using a mortar and pestle, coarsely grind the red onion, garlic, green chili, and a pinch of salt together until well combined. Drizzle a bit of the prepared sauce over this mixture.

  3. Serve: Arrange the fried tahu in a bowl or, for an authentic touch, on a traditional stone mortar (cobek). Pour the spice mixture over the tofu, followed by the sauce, ensuring each piece is generously coated.

Enjoy this delightful Indonesian street food, perfect for sharing with friends and family!
