Fluffy Batter Rolls Recipe
Description
This delightful recipe was plucked from a cookbook that accompanied some cookware I purchased at a state fair when I was 18! These rolls are a surefire hit at any gathering. Their incredible flavor and tender texture will surely impress your guests, and the simplicity of the recipe makes them a breeze to prepare.
Ingredients
- Milk – 3/4 cup
- Sugar – 1/4 cup
- Salt – 1 teaspoon
- Butter – 1/4 cup, unsalted
- Warm Water – 1/2 cup
- Active Dry Yeast – 2 teaspoons
- Egg – 1 large
- Unsifted Flour – 3 1/2 cups, divided
Instructions
-
Scald the Milk: Start by pouring 3/4 cup of milk into a 2-cup measuring cup. Microwave it for up to 3 minutes, or until it’s scalded. The milk should be hot but not boiling.
-
Combine Ingredients: Stir in 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 cup of unsalted butter into the hot milk. Mix until the butter is melted and everything is well combined. Allow this mixture to cool to lukewarm.
-
Prepare Yeast Mixture: In a 2-quart mixing bowl, measure 1/2 cup of warm water. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast over the water. Stir gently to combine and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
-
Mix the Dough: Add the cooled milk mixture, 1 large egg, and 2 cups of unsifted flour into the yeast mixture. Beat the ingredients together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
-
Knead the Dough: Gradually stir in enough of the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour to form a soft dough. Continue mixing until the dough is no longer sticky and comes together into a cohesive ball.
-
Let the Dough Rise: Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and place it in a warm, draft-free spot. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size, which should take about 30 minutes.
-
Shape the Rolls: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release any air bubbles. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into 24 equal-sized rolls.
-
Prepare for Baking: Arrange the rolls in a 9×13 inch baking pan or on a jelly roll pan. Cover them with a towel and let them rise again for approximately 30 minutes, or until they’ve puffed up and are nearly doubled in size.
-
Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the rolls for about 15 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and have a golden crust.
-
Cool and Serve: Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with butter, honey, or your favorite spread!
