Chammanthi Chutney is a traditional dish from Kerala, made with a blend of onions and coconut, which gives the chutney its rich and delicious flavor. It is perfect when paired with Dosa or Idli, making it an ideal side dish to enhance your meals.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut, grated
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt, to taste

Cook Time: 20 mins

Instructions:

  1. To make Chammanthi Chutney, start by adding ginger, dry red chilies, and coconut into a mixer jar. Grind them well into a smooth paste by adding a little water. Set the paste aside.
  2. Finely chop the onion and set it aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cook for 10 seconds until they splutter.
  4. Add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn soft and golden brown.
  5. Once the onions are cooked, add curry leaves and the ginger-chili-coconut paste to the pan. Stir well.
  6. Add a little water and salt, and bring the chutney to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, turn off the heat.
  7. Serve the Chammanthi Chutney with ghee-roasted dosa and mixed vegetable sambar for a complete meal.
