For the paste:

  • 1 cup coconut
  • 2 green chillies
  • 3 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder

For tempering:

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves

Prep Time: 40 minutes
Cook Time: 60 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Black Gram: Soak the black gram overnight in water. The next day, cook it until tender.

  2. Make the Paste: In a blender, combine coconut, green chillies, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, and red chilli powder. Grind it into a smooth paste and set aside.

  3. Cook the Gravy: Heat oil (or coconut oil) in a pan. Add the chopped onions and sauté until soft and golden. Add the ginger and garlic paste, cooking for another 2 minutes.

  4. Add the turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes soften and release their juices.

  5. Add the ground coconut paste to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.

  6. Combine with Black Gram: Add the cooked black gram and water to the pan. Stir well, cover, and let it simmer for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

  7. Prepare the Tadka (Tempering): In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they begin to splutter, add curry leaves and cook for 10 seconds.

  8. Final Touch: Pour the tempering over the curry and mix gently. Let it cook for another 3 minutes.

  9. Serve: Serve the Kerala Kadala Curry with Appam or steamed rice for a traditional meal. You can also pair it with Egg Roast for a fulfilling lunch.

Enjoy this hearty, flavorful curry that’s packed with protein and the authentic taste of Kerala!
