Malabar Style Dates Pickle is a unique and flavorful pickle from the Malabar region of Kerala. While dates are typically used in desserts or enjoyed raw, this instant pickle transforms them into a sweet, spicy, and tangy delight that bursts with flavor. The pickle takes only 10 minutes to prepare and pairs beautifully with dishes like Thalassery Biryani or Parathas.

Ingredients:

  • 250 grams Dates (pitted and roughly chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger (paste)
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic (paste)
  • 4 Green Chillies (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1 tablespoon Red Chilli powder
  • 3 tablespoons Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • Salt, to taste

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Begin by removing the seeds from the dates and roughly chopping them. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a wide pan. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter. Then add asafoetida and curry leaves, letting them splutter as well.
  3. Add the ginger, garlic paste, and chopped green chillies. Sauté until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Stir in turmeric and red chilli powder. Mix well.
  5. Add the chopped dates to the pan and cook until the dates become soft.
  6. Season the pickle with salt and sugar. Sauté for an additional minute until the seasoning is well incorporated.
  7. Pour in the vinegar and simmer until the pickle thickens and comes together. Then switch off the heat.
  8. Serve the Malabar Style Dates Pickle with Parathas for a delightful breakfast or enjoy it alongside Vegetable Biryani and Papadam for a flavorful weekend lunch.
