Matar Besan and Paneer Cheela Recipe

Description:
Cheela is a popular North Indian breakfast dish similar to dosa, made with chickpea flour (besan). It is a quick, easy-to-make recipe that is often prepared in many households across North India, especially for a nutritious breakfast. With the goodness of green peas, chickpea flour, and cottage cheese (paneer), this dish is wholesome, savory, and delightful when served with chutneys or a hot cup of masala chai.

Cuisine: North Indian
Course: Breakfast
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

Ingredient Name Quantity
Green Peas (हरे मटर) 1 cup, boiled
Chickpea Flour (बेसन) 1 cup
Paneer (पनीर) 1/2 cup, grated
Ginger (अदरक) 1 tsp, finely chopped
Green Chilies (हरी मिर्च) 2, finely chopped
Turmeric Powder (हल्दी पाउडर) 1/2 tsp
Cumin Powder (जीरा पाउडर) 1/2 tsp
Salt (नमक) 1/2 tsp
Oil (तेल) As needed for cooking

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Servings: 2-3

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Green Pea Paste:
Begin by placing the boiled green peas, chopped ginger, and green chilies into a blender or food processor. Add a little water and blend them into a smooth paste. Transfer this paste into a mixing bowl.

  2. Prepare the Batter:
To the green pea paste, add chickpea flour (besan), grated paneer, turmeric powder, cumin powder, salt, and a little water to adjust the consistency. Mix everything well to form a smooth, thick batter. If the batter is too thick, you can add a little more water.

  3. Cook the Cheela:
Heat a non-stick pan or tawa over medium heat. Once hot, pour a portion of the batter into the center of the pan and spread it out into a circular shape using the back of a spoon. Drizzle a little oil around the edges and cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side until it turns golden brown.

  4. Flip and Cook:
Once the underside is golden and crisp, flip the cheela carefully and cook the other side until it’s equally golden and crispy.

  5. Serve:
Remove the cheela from the pan and place it on a plate. Serve hot with refreshing coriander-mint chutney or tangy tamarind chutney. For a more filling breakfast, pair the cheela with a cup of masala chai.
