Cumin Seeds (Jeera) 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida (Hing) A pinch
Ghee 1 tbsp
Fresh Mint (Pudina) 2 tbsp, chopped
Water As needed

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2

Cuisine: North Indian

Course: Lunch

Diet: High Protein Vegetarian

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Moong Dal:

    • Start by washing the moong dal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, add the moong dal, 1 cup of water, and turmeric powder.
    • Close the lid and cook on medium heat for about 2 whistles.
    • Once done, turn off the gas and allow the pressure to release naturally.
    • After opening the cooker, add 1 ½ cups of water to the cooked dal and salt to taste. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for a few minutes. Once the dal is well-combined, turn off the heat.
  2. Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):

    • In a small tempering pan, heat 1 tbsp of ghee over medium heat.
    • Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
    • Next, add a pinch of asafoetida and chopped mint leaves to the hot ghee. Stir-fry for about 10 seconds until the mint leaves become fragrant.
    • Add red chili powder and sauté for another 10 seconds to bring out the flavors.
  3. Combine and Simmer:

    • Pour the prepared tempering into the cooked dal and mix well. Allow the dal to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes so that the flavors meld together.
  4. Serve:

    • Once done, your Pudina Moong Dal is ready to serve! Pair it with Bhindi Masala, Boondi Raita, and Phulkas (Indian flatbreads) for a complete meal.

This dish is a perfect example of how simple ingredients can come together to create a flavorful, protein-rich, and aromatic dish. The mint adds a refreshing contrast to the creamy dal, making it a delicious choice for any meal of the day.
