Recipe Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and sugars until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Set aside half of the dough.
  5. Divide the remaining dough in half; add green food coloring to one portion and red food coloring to the other, mixing until evenly colored.
  6. Wrap the dough separately in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour or until easy to handle.
  7. Once chilled, take ½ teaspoonfuls of each color of dough and roll into 3-inch ropes.
  8. Place each green rope next to a white rope and press together gently, then twist to create the candy cane pattern.
  9. Repeat the process with the red ropes and remaining white ropes.
  10. Place the formed cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  11. Curve one end of each cookie, forming a cane shape.
  12. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 11-13 minutes or until set.
  13. Allow the cookies to cool for 2 minutes on the baking sheets, then carefully remove them to wire racks to cool completely.
