Ingredients:

  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup dried currants (or substitute with dried cranberries)
  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped filberts (hazelnuts)
  • 2/3 cup chopped almonds
  • 3/4 cup chopped dried apricots

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Nuts:

    • Spread the filberts on a rimmed baking sheet, and the almonds on another.
    • Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5-8 minutes, or until very lightly browned, shaking the pans occasionally.
  2. Cool and Chop Nuts:

    • Let the nuts cool.
    • Rub filberts in your hands to loosen as much of the brown exterior as possible, then blow or fan off the chaff.
    • Coarsely chop filberts and almonds. It’s best to use a hand chopper rather than a food processor to avoid turning the nuts into butter.
  3. Mix Ingredients:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped nuts with oats, wheat germ, dried currants, chopped dried apricots, and brown sugar.
    • Blend everything together until well combined.
  4. Storage:

    • Store the Swiss-style cereal in a tightly closed container at room temperature.
  5. Serving:
