Description:

Discover the delight of a hearty, flavorful meal with this quick and easy Keema Curry recipe. Originating from a Dutch language curry cookbook, this version has been adapted to enhance its deliciousness while maintaining simplicity. With a perfect blend of spices and ingredients, this curry offers a complete meal in one pot with minimal cleanup. Plus, the leftovers taste amazing cold the next day, though there’s usually not much left to save!

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2-4 chili peppers, sliced (adjust to taste)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons oil (for cooking)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Spice Mix: In a small bowl or coffee cup, combine the ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, ground cumin, cardamom powder, ginger powder, and chili powder. Mix well to create a fragrant spice blend that will infuse your curry with rich flavors.

  2. Cook the Vegetables: Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions, sliced chili peppers, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions become translucent and soft, which should take about 5 minutes. This will create a flavorful base for your curry.

  3. Incorporate the Spices: Add the prepared spice mix to the vegetable mixture in the frying pan. Stir well to ensure that the spices are evenly distributed and begin to release their aromatic scents.

  4. Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef to the pan, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is thoroughly browned and well combined with the spices. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

  5. Add Liquids: Pour in the water and add the tomato paste. Stir everything together to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until most of the water has evaporated, leaving a thick, flavorful sauce.

  6. Mix in Potatoes and Beans: Add the diced potatoes and green beans to the pan. Stir to mix everything together. Pour in the coconut milk and mix well. If necessary, add a small amount of water (no more than 1/4 cup) to help incorporate the coconut milk and achieve your desired consistency.

  7. Simmer and Serve: Allow the curry to simmer gently until the potatoes are tender and cooked through, and the green beans are heated. This should take about 15-20 minutes. Once everything is hot and well combined, serve the curry hot with your favorite side dishes.

Enjoy this delightful Keema Curry, a true one-pot wonder that brings together the savory goodness of beef, the heartiness of potatoes, and the freshness of green beans, all enveloped in a creamy, spiced coconut sauce. Perfect for a satisfying dinner with minimal fuss!
