Fig Compote Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield: Makes about 1 cup

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange, peeled and cut into sections
  • 1/2 cup black mission figs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 3 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Orange:
Peel the orange and cut it into sections over a bowl. Squeeze the sections to release the juice. Set aside.

  2. Combine Ingredients:
In a medium saucepan, combine the squeezed orange sections (with juice), black mission figs, sugar, red wine, fresh thyme sprigs, and water.

  3. Infuse Flavors:
Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

  4. Cook the Compote:
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  5. Finish and Cool:
Remove and discard the thyme sprigs. Allow the fig compote to cool to room temperature.

  6. Serve or Store:
Transfer the cooled fig compote to a jar or airtight container. It can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Enjoy this delightful fig compote served alongside cheese, yogurt, or as a topping for desserts like ice cream or pound cake. It’s a versatile addition to your culinary repertoire, perfect for any occasion where a touch of sweetness and sophistication is desired.
