  • 1-inch Ginger
  • 6 cloves Garlic
  • 2 Dry Red Chilli
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander (Dhania) Seeds
  • 1/2 inch Cinnamon Stick (Dalchini)
  • 2 Cloves (Laung)
  • 4 Whole Black Peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon Poppy seeds

For the Tadka:

  • 1 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)

Preparation Time:

  • 10 minutes

Cooking Time:

  • 20 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Soak the Dal: Begin by washing and soaking the toor dal in a bowl with 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes. Drain the water after soaking.

  2. Prepare the Masala:

    • In a small pan, dry roast the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, black peppercorns, and poppy seeds until aromatic. Set aside to cool.
    • Once cooled, grind them along with the green chili, ginger, garlic, and coriander leaves into a fine masala paste using a little water.
  3. Cook the Dal:

    • Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a pressure cooker. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
    • Add the chopped tomato and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the tomatoes soften.
    • Stir in the turmeric powder and ground masala paste. Sauté the mixture for about 3-4 minutes until the spices are well-cooked.
    • Add the soaked dal, salt to taste, and enough water to cover the dal. Close the lid and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is tender.
  4. Prepare the Tadka:

    • In a separate small pan, heat 1 teaspoon ghee. Add 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds and allow them to splutter. Pour this tadka over the cooked dal.
  5. Serve: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

Enjoy the rich and flavorful Tuvar Ni Dal, a comforting dish that’s packed with protein and perfect for any meal.
