Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Set it aside, letting the butter coat the bottom of the pan as it melts.
  3. Prepare the sugar syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is fully dissolved into the water. Once dissolved, remove the syrup from the heat and set it aside.
  4. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour and shortening. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the shortening into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
  5. Add the milk and stir the mixture with a fork until the dough begins to come together and leaves the sides of the bowl.
  6. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface or pastry cloth. Knead gently just until smooth. Do not overwork the dough to maintain its tenderness.
  7. Roll out the dough: Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.
  8. Assemble the rolls: Sprinkle the cinnamon evenly over the sliced peaches. Then spread the cinnamon-coated peaches across the dough.
  9. Roll the dough: Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough up like a jelly roll, keeping the peach mixture inside.
  10. Seal the roll: Dampen the edge of the dough with a little water to help seal it closed.
  11. Slice the dough: Using a sharp knife, cut the rolled dough into approximately 16 equal slices.
  12. Place the rolls in the pan: Arrange the slices upright in the pan with the melted butter.
  13. Pour the sugar syrup: Carefully pour the sugar syrup you prepared earlier around the rolls. It may seem like there’s too much liquid, but don’t worry — the dough will absorb it as it bakes, creating a deliciously moist crust.
  14. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden and most of the syrup has been absorbed. The rolls should be slightly puffed and fragrant.
  15. Serve: Once the cobbler roll is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a decadent treat.

Tips & Variations

  • Peach substitutions: While fresh peaches are ideal, you can use canned peaches in syrup or frozen peaches if fresh ones are unavailable. Just be sure to drain canned peaches well before using them in the recipe.
  • Flavor variations: Add a pinch of nutmeg or ground ginger to the cinnamon for extra depth of flavor.
  • Make it ahead: You can assemble the rolls and store them in the fridge for up to 12 hours before baking. Simply bake when you’re ready for dessert.

This Fresh Peach Cobbler Roll is a comforting and indulgent dessert perfect for family gatherings, summer barbecues, or anytime you crave a sweet treat. The combination of soft dough, spiced peaches, and syrup-soaked crust will have everyone coming back for more!
