Delightful Cinnamon Buns: A Bread Machine Recipe

Description

These delectable cinnamon buns are a perfect treat for any time of day, crafted with the help of a bread machine for an effortless baking experience. Utilizing the dough setting on your bread machine makes this recipe especially convenient for those who prefer not to knead dough by hand. You have the option to make these buns with or without a rich brown sugar syrup. If you choose to skip the syrup, a simple glaze can be drizzled on top for a touch of sweetness. Note that the prep time does not account for the rising periods in both the bread machine and while the buns are proofing. Although this recipe is delightful, I have transitioned to making Hot Dog/Hamburger Rolls (recipe #96475) which also yields fantastic cinnamon buns.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons skim milk powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 4 1/4 cups flour

For the Cinnamon Filling:

  • 2/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon

For the Syrup (Optional):

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • Begin by adding the water, egg, sugar, skim milk powder, butter, salt, and flour to the bread machine in the order recommended by your machine’s instructions. Set the machine to the dough cycle and let it work its magic.
  2. Prepare the Syrup (Optional):

    • In a small saucepan, combine the butter, water, and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring continuously. Allow it to boil for 1 minute. Pour the hot syrup into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
  3. Prepare the Filling:

    • In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Shape the Buns:

    • Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the bread machine and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out into a rectangle approximately 12×18 inches in size.
    • Evenly spread the cinnamon filling over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, creating a log shape.
  5. Cut and Arrange:

    • Slice the rolled dough into 8 equal pieces. Place each piece cut-side up on top of the prepared syrup in the baking pan.
  6. Proof the Buns:

    • Allow the buns to rise in a warm, draft-free area until they have doubled in size. This can take approximately 30 minutes or longer depending on your kitchen conditions.
  7. Bake:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for about 25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Invert and Serve:

    • Immediately after removing from the oven, carefully invert the pan onto a cookie sheet to release the buns from the syrup. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Serving Suggestions

These cinnamon buns are best enjoyed warm, straight from the oven. If you have chosen to omit the syrup, you can glaze the buns with a thin icing made from powdered sugar and milk for added sweetness.
