Bread Upma is easy to prepare and can be served for breakfast or packed in your kids’ lunchboxes for a quick, wholesome meal.

Ingredients

Ingredient Name Quantity
Whole Wheat Brown Bread 16 slices
Tomatoes 3, chopped small
Onions 2, thinly sliced
Green Chillies 2, finely chopped
Sambar Powder 1 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder (Haldi) 1 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds (Rai/Kadugu) 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves 3 sprigs
Salt To taste
Butter (Salted) For cooking
Coriander (Dhania) Leaves 2 sprigs, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Toast the Bread:
Begin by toasting the whole wheat bread slices. Once toasted, spread a thin layer of butter on each slice and cut them into small pieces. Set them aside for later.

  2. Prepare the Base:
Heat some oil in a pan or kadhai. Add mustard seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter for about 10 seconds. Add finely sliced onions and green chilies. Sauté the onions until they turn soft and translucent.

  3. Add Spices and Tomatoes:
Once the onions are soft, add chopped tomatoes, curry leaves, turmeric powder, salt, and Sambar powder. Let the mixture cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.

  4. Add Bread:
Once the tomatoes have softened, add the bread pieces to the pan. Stir everything together gently to ensure the bread absorbs all the flavors and spices. Cook for another 2 minutes on high heat.

  5. Finish with Coriander:
Once the bread is cooked, sprinkle freshly chopped coriander leaves on top and give it a final stir. Remove from heat.

  6. Serve:
Serve your hot and spicy Bread Upma immediately, paired with some fresh fruit and a cup of masala chai for a fulfilling breakfast or lunch.

This recipe is not only quick and easy to make but also packed with delicious flavors from South India. The crispy bread pieces absorb the tanginess of the tomatoes and the warmth of the spices, making it a perfect comfort food that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Enjoy your Bread Upma with a steaming cup of tea for a delightful morning treat!
