Ingredients
- 500 grams beef (preferably from the tenderloin), cut into cubes
For the Spice Paste:
- 4 shallots
- 3 cloves garlic
- 3 candlenuts
- 1 slice ginger
- 6 bird’s eye chilies
- Ground black pepper, to taste
Additional Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons margarine
- Salt, to taste
- Brown sugar or granulated sugar, to taste
- Flavor enhancer (optional), to taste
- ¾ tablespoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- 8 tablespoons roasted peanuts, finely ground
Instructions
-
Cook the Beef:
- Begin by boiling the beef cubes in a pot of water until tender. Season with a pinch of salt. Once the beef is cooked and the water has mostly evaporated, remove the beef from the pot and drain. Set aside.
-
Prepare the Spice Paste:
- While the beef is cooking, prepare the spice paste. In a blender or food processor, combine shallots, garlic, candlenuts, ginger, bird’s eye chilies, and ground black pepper. Blend until smooth.
-
Cook the Spice Paste:
- Heat the margarine in a pan over medium heat. Add the blended spice paste and sauté until it becomes aromatic and slightly caramelized. Pour in 1.5 cups of the beef cooking liquid and bring to a boil.
-
Combine Ingredients:
- Once the mixture is boiling, add the cooked beef and ground roasted peanuts. Stir well to combine.
-
Adjust the Seasonings:
- Season the dish with brown sugar, salt, and flavor enhancer if using. Add the sweet soy sauce and continue cooking until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
-
Serving:
- Transfer the beef to a serving dish. If you prefer, you can skewer the beef pieces onto bamboo sticks and arrange them on a plate, then drizzle with the peanut sauce.
-
Enjoy:
- Serve hot with steamed rice. Enjoy your flavorful Indonesian beef satay!
Tips:
- For an extra touch of authenticity, serve the satay with additional chopped peanuts and fresh cucumber slices.
- If you prefer a spicier dish, increase the amount of bird’s eye chilies in the spice paste.
Happy cooking! This dish promises a burst of flavors that will surely delight your family and friends.
