Kaya Tholi Thoran is a delightful South Indian dish made with raw banana peel and coconut, perfect as a side dish for your meal. The combination of spices and coconut adds a unique flavor that pairs well with rice and sambar.

Ingredients:

  • Peel of 2 raw bananas
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4 green chilies
  • 6 small onions
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 8 curry leaves

Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Serves: 4

Instructions:

  1. Start by peeling the raw bananas and chopping the peel into small pieces.
  2. In a saucepan, add the raw banana peel pieces along with turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Cook the mixture until the peel becomes soft.
  3. For the masala, grind together the grated coconut, garlic, cumin seeds, green chilies, and small onions in a mixer until smooth.
  4. Heat oil in a small pan and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter for 10 seconds.
  5. Add curry leaves and dried red chilies, and cook for another 10 seconds.
  6. Add the ground coconut masala to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  7. Now add the cooked raw banana peel to the pan and mix well. Cook for another 1-2 minutes to combine the flavors.
  8. Serve the Kaya Tholi Thoran hot with Kirai Sambar and rice for a wholesome South Indian lunch.
