Instructions:

Combine dried navy beans with enough water to cover by 2 inches in a large saucepan and let them stand overnight.

Drain and rinse the soaked beans.

In a saucepan, bring the soaked beans and 5 cups of water to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 hour or until the beans are just tender.

Drain the beans and set them aside.

In another large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Add the chopped celery, chopped carrot, chopped green onion, minced garlic, chopped basil, salt, and pepper.

Cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.

Cover the saucepan, reduce the heat to low, and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are tender.

Add the cooked beans and vegetable broth to the saucepan with the cooked vegetables.
