Description:
There is Goulash and there is Goulash and there is this Goulash, they are mostly all good but I find this one distinctive. The sauerkraut gives great flavor. Do ahead and reheat the flavor is even better. I use wine-cured kraut.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon lite olive oil
- 1 pound beef, cubed
- 1 pound pork, cubed
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons hot paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
- 2 cups sauerkraut
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- Salt, to taste
Instructions:
Step | Details |
---|---|
1 | In a Dutch oven, heat oil over medium heat. Brown the beef and pork on all sides until nicely seared. Once browned, remove from the pot and set aside. |
2 | Add the chopped onions to the same skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until they become translucent and fragrant. |
3 | Pour off any excess fat from the skillet, then return the browned meat to the pot with the sautéed onions. |
4 | Sprinkle in the hot paprika and dried marjoram, ensuring they coat the meat evenly, infusing it with rich flavor. |
5 | Layer the sauerkraut over the meat and spices, spreading it evenly across the top. |
6 | Cover the Dutch oven and bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 1 hour, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully. |
7 | After baking, season with salt to taste, adjusting as necessary to suit your preferences. |
8 | When ready to serve, stir in the sour cream and caraway seeds, creating a creamy and aromatic sauce that complements the hearty goulash. |
9 | Serve your Hungarian Goulash over hot buttered noodles, allowing the tender meat and flavorful sauerkraut to mingle with the pasta, creating a satisfying meal. |
