This simple yet flavorful Indonesian dish combines the earthy taste of tempeh with the crispiness of long beans, all brought together with the sweet and savory flavors of soy sauce and spices. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal!

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Long beans (kacang panjang) 1 bunch
Tempeh (tempe) 1 block
Shallots (bawang merah) 4 cloves
Garlic (bawang putih) 3 cloves
Red chilies (cabe merah) 3 pieces
Tomato (tomat) 1 medium-sized
Salt (garam) To taste
Sugar (gula) To taste
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) To taste
Water A splash
Cooking oil As needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Begin by cutting the long beans into approximately 2-inch pieces. Cut the tempeh into bite-sized cubes. Rinse the long beans thoroughly under running water to ensure they are clean.

  2. Fry the Tempeh:
Heat some oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, fry the tempeh cubes until they turn golden brown and crispy on the outside. Remove the tempeh from the oil and drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

  3. Sauté the Aromatics:
Thinly slice the shallots, garlic, chilies, and tomato. In the same pan, leave about 1-2 tablespoons of oil, and sauté the shallots, garlic, and chilies over medium heat until fragrant and softened. Add the tomato and continue cooking for another minute.

  4. Cook the Beans and Tempeh:
Add the cleaned long beans to the pan, along with a splash of water to help them cook. Stir well and allow the beans to cook until they start to become tender, about 3-5 minutes.

  5. Season and Combine:
Add the fried tempeh back into the pan with the beans. Season with salt, sugar, and sweet soy sauce to taste. Stir everything together, ensuring the tempeh and beans are evenly coated with the sauce.

  6. Simmer and Finish:
Cook the mixture for another 5-7 minutes until the beans are fully tender and the flavors have melded together. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, sugar, or sweet soy sauce if necessary.

  7. Serve:
Once the dish is cooked through and the flavors are balanced, remove it from the heat. Serve hot with steamed rice for a delicious and satisfying meal.

Enjoy this delicious and healthy Indonesian-inspired stir-fry!
