Tumis Tahu Brokoli: A Flavorful Stir-Fry Delight

Ingredients:

  • 3 pieces of firm tofu, cut into small cubes
  • 1 head of broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 5 red chili peppers, sliced diagonally
  • 6 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, crushed and finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Soy sauce, to taste
  • Sugar, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Broccoli:

    • Begin by soaking the broccoli florets in a bowl of salted water for about 5 minutes. This will help to crisp up the broccoli and remove any impurities. After soaking, rinse the broccoli under plain water and set it aside.
  2. Prepare the Tofu:

    • Soak the tofu cubes in a salted water bath for around 5 minutes to enhance their flavor. After soaking, pat them dry with paper towels. Heat oil in a pan and fry the tofu cubes until they are golden and slightly crispy on the outside, but still tender inside. Remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.
  3. Sauté Aromatics:

    • In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the sliced red chilies, shallots, and garlic until they become fragrant and turn a golden brown color.
  4. Create the Sauce:

    • Add a splash of water to the pan, then stir in the ground black pepper, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and salt. Adjust the seasoning to taste, ensuring the balance of savory, sweet, and salty flavors.
  5. Cook the Broccoli:

    • Add the broccoli florets to the pan and stir-fry for a short time, just until they are bright green and tender-crisp. Avoid overcooking to keep the broccoli vibrant and slightly crunchy.
  6. Combine Tofu and Sauce:

    • Return the fried tofu cubes to the pan. Mix everything thoroughly and add a little more water if needed to create a nice sauce consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  7. Finish and Serve:

    • Once the tofu is well coated and the broccoli is cooked to your liking, remove the pan from the heat. Serve your Tumis Tahu Brokoli hot, ideally with steamed rice for a complete and satisfying meal.

Enjoy this deliciously savory and slightly spicy stir-fry, perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a special occasion meal!
