Hot Bean Compote Recipe

Description: If you’re a fan of bean salad, then this Hot Bean Compote is sure to tantalize your taste buds. This recipe, inspired by a classic from a Pillsbury cookbook, has been a favorite since my early days of marriage. I’ve made a small tweak to the original recipe, swapping out kidney beans for green beans and wax beans to suit my family’s preferences.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Bacon 3-4 slices
Sugar 1/2 cup
Cornstarch 1 tbsp
Salt 1/2 tsp
Pepper 1/4 tsp
Vinegar 2/3 cup
Onion, chopped 1
Green beans, drained 1 can
Wax beans, drained 1 can

Instructions:

  1. Fry Bacon: Begin by frying the bacon in a skillet until it’s nice and crisp. Once done, remove the bacon from the skillet and drain it on a paper towel to remove excess grease.

  2. Prepare Sauce: In the same skillet with the bacon drippings, add the sugar and cornstarch. Stir well to combine, creating a thickening base for the sauce.

  3. Season: To the sugar and cornstarch mixture, add salt, pepper, and vinegar. Stir the ingredients together until well blended.

  4. Thicken: Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to boil. Allow it to boil for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.

  5. Add Beans: Once the sauce has reached the desired consistency, stir in the chopped onion and the drained green beans and wax beans. Ensure all the beans are well coated in the delicious sauce.

  6. Simmer: Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Let the beans simmer in the flavorful sauce for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

  7. Serve: Once the beans are tender and infused with the savory sauce, it’s time to serve. Transfer the Hot Bean Compote to a serving dish and sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the top for an added burst of flavor and texture.

  8. Enjoy: This Hot Bean Compote makes for a delightful side dish at potlucks, family gatherings, or any meal where you want to impress with minimal effort. Each spoonful bursts with the savory-sweet flavors of the sauce, complemented by the tender beans and crispy bacon. So, dish up and savor every bite of this comforting and satisfying dish! 🍲🥓🌿
