Instructions:

Trim extra fat off the beef chuck roast.

Brown the roast in 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a large skillet.

Drain off excess fat.

Place carrots, onions, celery, and sliced dill pickle in the bottom of your slow cooker.

Position the browned roast on top of the vegetables.

In a small mixing bowl or large measuring cup, combine the red wine (or beef broth), German mustard, black pepper, ground cloves, and bay leaves.

Pour the liquid mixture over the meat in the slow cooker.

Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 8 to 10 hours or on high-heat setting for 4 to 5 hours, until the meat is tender and flavorful.

In a small shaker, combine 4 tablespoons of red wine (or broth) with 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Shake until well blended.
