Ingredients:

  • 4 cups rice (use a standard measuring cup)
  • 250 grams beef (pre-cooked until half tender, diced)
  • 500 ml water (adjust as needed; slightly more than 4 cups of rice)

For the Spice Paste:

  • 6 shallots
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 turmeric roots
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt (adjust to taste)

Additional Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons margarine or ghee
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 sachet instant curry seasoning (e.g., Indofood)
  • 10 cm cinnamon stick
  • 4 tablespoons curry powder (or substitute with the spice blend below)

Spice Blend Substitute for Curry Powder:

  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cardamom pods (seeds only)
  • 5 cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For Serving:

  • 2 sliced cucumbers
  • Omelette (or quail eggs as preferred)
  • Emping or crackers
  • Sambal (chili sauce)
  • Fried shallots

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Begin by boiling the beef until it is half-cooked, then cut it into small cubes.
    • Wash the rice thoroughly and set it aside. Do not add water yet.
  2. Make the Spice Paste:

    • In a blender or food processor, blend the shallots, garlic, and turmeric until smooth.
    • Heat the margarine and cooking oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Add the spice paste to the pan and sauté until fragrant.
    • Stir in the coriander seeds, instant curry seasoning, salt, and the additional spice blend if using.
    • Cook for a few more minutes to allow the spices to release their flavors.
  3. Cook the Beef:

    • Pour in the water and stir to combine with the spice mixture.
    • Add the diced beef to the pan and simmer until the beef is tender and cooked through.
    • Once the beef is cooked, turn off the heat.
  4. Prepare the Rice Cooker:

    • Transfer the beef and spice mixture into the rice cooker.
    • Add the pre-washed rice and stir to combine everything evenly.
    • Cook the mixture in the rice cooker, stirring occasionally.
