Beef Black Pepper (Daging Lada Hitam) – A Simple Recipe

Indulge in the rich, savory flavors of Beef Black Pepper, a delightful dish known as Daging Lada Hitam in Indonesian cuisine. This recipe is perfect for those who appreciate a blend of sweet, savory, and spicy elements, with a simple approach to preparation that makes it ideal for busy weeknights or special occasions alike.

Ingredients:

For the Marinade:

  • 250 grams of beef, cut into cubes
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (traditional recipe does not include this)
  • 2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 4 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For Stir-Frying:

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, diced or sliced
  • 3 long green beans (traditionally green bell pepper, but I used green beans due to availability)
  • 3 red chili peppers (traditionally red bell pepper, but I used red chili peppers due to availability)
  • Water, as needed
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Beef:

    • In a bowl, combine the cubed beef with all the marinade ingredients. Mix thoroughly to ensure the beef is well-coated.
    • Cover and let it marinate for approximately 1 hour to allow the flavors to infuse into the meat.
  2. Prepare the Stir-Fry Ingredients:

    • While the beef is marinating, prepare the ingredients for stir-frying. Mince the garlic, dice or slice the onion, and chop the green beans and red chili peppers.
  3. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat the butter in a large skillet or wok over medium heat.
    • Add the minced garlic and diced onion to the skillet. Sauté until fragrant and the onion becomes translucent.
    • Introduce the marinated beef along with the marinade into the skillet. Stir well and cook until the beef is browned and cooked through.
    • Add a small amount of water if necessary to create a sauce and let it simmer until the sauce thickens.
  4. Add Vegetables and Seasoning:

    • Incorporate the green beans and red chili peppers into the skillet. Stir to combine and cook for a few minutes until the vegetables are tender.
    • Season with additional black pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning as needed.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve the Beef Black Pepper hot over a bed of steaming rice. Enjoy the rich flavors and satisfying combination of tender beef and crisp vegetables.

This Beef Black Pepper recipe is wonderfully flavorful even without the addition of sugar or salt, making it a delicious and healthy option. Perfectly suited to complement a bowl of fluffy rice, this dish is sure to become a favorite in your recipe collection.
