Black Pepper Beef (Sapi Lada Hitam)

This flavorful Black Pepper Beef (Sapi Lada Hitam) dish combines tender slices of beef with an aromatic mix of spices, crunchy vegetables, and a rich savory sauce. Perfect for a hearty meal, this recipe features a balance of sweet, salty, and spicy elements, making it a crowd-pleaser. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 400 grams of beef, sliced
  • 3 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 corn, kernels removed
  • 15 green beans, cut into 4-5 pieces
  • 2 large green chilies, sliced diagonally
  • 2 green tomatoes, cut into six wedges
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Palm sugar, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Sugar, to taste
  • Oil, for cooking
  • 160 ml water

For the Spice Paste:

  • 4 shallots
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 piece ginger, peeled and roasted

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Spice Paste: Begin by blending the shallots, garlic, and roasted ginger into a smooth paste.

  2. Sauté the Spice Paste: Heat a generous amount of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until fragrant.

  3. Cook the Beef: Increase the heat to high and add the sliced beef to the pan. Stir-fry the beef for 2-3 minutes until it starts to brown.

  4. Add Sauces and Seasonings: Pour in the sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce, palm sugar, salt, sugar, ground black pepper, and bay leaves. Mix well.

  5. Add Vegetables: Pour in the water and add the sliced green chilies, sliced onion, green beans, corn kernels, and green tomatoes. Stir to combine everything evenly.

  6. Simmer: Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover the pan and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

  7. Adjust the Taste: Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you prefer extra spiciness, you can add a tablespoon of chili flakes or chili paste.

  8. Serve: Once the vegetables are tender and the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency, remove from heat. Serve hot with steamed rice.

Enjoy your delicious and aromatic Black Pepper Beef!
