  • 6-8 slices of bread
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Seasoning to taste

Instructions

Step Description
1. In a skillet, melt a portion of the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic, finely chopped onion, and paprika. Sauté until the ingredients are soft and fragrant.
2. Use the remaining butter to generously grease an ovenproof dish.
3. Cut each slice of bread into triangles and arrange six slices, with the buttered side facing up, in the prepared dish.
4. Sprinkle half of the sautéed onion-garlic mixture and half of the grated cheese over the bread slices.
5. Arrange the remaining bread slices on top, this time with the buttered side facing down. Top with the remaining onion-garlic mixture and grated cheese.
6. In a jug, whisk together the egg yolk, eggs, milk, and seasonings until well combined.
7. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread in the dish.
8. Cover the dish and let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow the bread to soak up the custard mixture.
9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
10. Uncover the bread pudding and bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard has set.
11. Once baked, remove the pudding from the oven and sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the top for a burst of freshness.
12. Serve the Savoury Bread and Butter Pudding warm, allowing your guests to indulge in its savory goodness!
