Soft and Fragrant Egg Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 500 grams ground chicken thigh
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons tapioca flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Egg Roll Wrappers:

  • 5 large eggs
  • 100 ml water
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon tapioca flour

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken thigh, egg, minced garlic, and Chinese five-spice powder. Mix thoroughly.
    • Add the all-purpose flour, tapioca flour, cornstarch, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, and black pepper. Stir until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  2. Prepare the Egg Roll Wrappers:

    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, water, all-purpose flour, and tapioca flour until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
    • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lightly grease the skillet if necessary.
    • Pour a small amount of the egg mixture into the skillet, tilting it to spread the mixture evenly into a thin layer. Cook until the wrapper is set and lightly golden, about 1-2 minutes. Remove and set aside. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
  3. Assemble the Egg Rolls:

    • Place a thin egg wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon approximately 2 tablespoons of the chicken filling mixture onto the wrapper.
    • Roll the wrapper tightly around the filling, similar to making spring rolls. Ensure the ends are sealed well to enclose the filling completely.
  4. Steam the Egg Rolls:

    • Wrap each egg roll in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, ensuring they are tightly sealed.
    • Arrange the wrapped egg rolls in a steamer basket, making sure they are not touching each other.
    • Steam over medium heat for about 40 minutes, or until the filling is cooked through and the texture is firm.
  5. Serve:

    • Once steamed, carefully remove the egg rolls from the wrap and let them cool slightly before slicing.
    • Serve warm as an appetizer or side dish.
