Sate Tempe

Sate Tempe is a delightful Indonesian dish featuring marinated tempeh skewers that are both flavorful and easy to prepare. This recipe provides a perfect balance of spices, making it a delicious vegetarian option for any meal.

Ingredients

Ingredient Amount/Notes
Tempe (cut into cubes) To taste
Chili peppers To preference
Shallots 5 bulbs (adjust as desired)
Garlic 5 cloves (adjust as desired)
Candlenuts (kemiri) 5 nuts
Galangal 1 thumb-sized piece
Kaffir lime leaves 2-3 sprigs (4-6 leaves)
Palm sugar To taste
Honey To taste
Sweet soy sauce (optional) To taste
Salt To taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a blender, combine the shallots, garlic, candlenuts, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves. Blend until smooth.
  2. Cook the Marinade: Heat a pan and sauté the blended mixture until fragrant. Add the cubed tempeh and a splash of water, stirring gently to coat the tempeh in the marinade. Cook until the flavors meld and the tempeh absorbs the marinade, then remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Skewer the Tempeh: Once the tempeh mixture is cool enough to handle, thread the pieces onto skewers (using wooden or metal skewers).
  4. Grill the Skewers: For convenience, you can grill the skewers on a non-stick skillet or pan. Cook until they are nicely charred and heated through. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also grill them over charcoal for an authentic flavor.
  5. Serve: Enjoy your Sate Tempe warm, drizzled with additional sweet soy sauce if desired.

This Sate Tempe is not just easy to prepare; it also offers a rich blend of Indonesian flavors that are sure to satisfy your taste buds!
