Nasi Goreng Buntut Sapi: A Savory Indonesian Beef Oxtail Fried Rice

Ingredients:

  • 2 servings of white rice (cooked)
  • 3 pieces of beef oxtail
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 10 small chili peppers (bird’s eye chilies)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Chicken bouillon powder, to taste
  • Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), to taste

For the Spice Paste:

  • 4 shallots
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 red chilies

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Begin by gathering all necessary ingredients. Cut the beef oxtail into bite-sized pieces, separating the meat from the bones. Slice the small chili peppers and set aside.

  2. Make the Spice Paste: Blend the shallots, garlic, and red chilies into a smooth paste. This will form the base flavor for your fried rice.

  3. Cook the Spice Paste: Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until it becomes fragrant and the raw smell of the spices disappears.

  4. Add Beef Oxtail and Chilies: Incorporate the oxtail pieces and sliced chili peppers into the pan. Stir well to ensure the oxtail is evenly coated with the spice mixture. Continue to cook until the beef is well browned and cooked through.

  5. Fry the Rice: Add the cooked white rice to the pan. Use a spatula to break up any clumps and mix thoroughly with the beef and spice mixture. Stir continuously to ensure the rice is evenly fried and does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

  6. Season to Taste: Season with salt and chicken bouillon powder according to your preference. Taste the rice and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

  7. Add Sweet Soy Sauce: Drizzle the sweet soy sauce over the rice and stir quickly to distribute the sauce evenly. The rice should be well-coated with the soy sauce, giving it a rich, dark color. Make sure to stir swiftly to prevent burning.

  8. Serve: Once the rice is evenly mixed and the soy sauce is fully incorporated, remove from heat. Serve the Nasi Goreng Buntut Sapi hot, garnished with crispy fried shallots if desired.

Enjoy this delightful Indonesian dish, perfect for a satisfying meal that combines tender beef oxtail with the savory richness of fried rice.
