Tahu Saus Tiram: A Savory Indonesian Tofu Dish

Ingredients:

  • 2 blocks of white tofu
  • 1 stalk of green onion (daun bawang), chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 small chili (cabe rawit), finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons oyster sauce (saus tiram)
  • Palm sugar (gula jawa), to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional: seasoning powder, to taste
  • A splash of water
  • A small amount of cooking oil for sautéing

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:

    • Cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces according to your preference.
    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the tofu pieces until golden brown and crispy. Remove and set aside on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  2. Sauté Aromatics:

    • In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Sauté the minced garlic and sliced shallots until they become fragrant and translucent.
  3. Combine Ingredients:

    • Add a splash of water to the pan to deglaze, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
    • Stir in the chopped chili, fried tofu, palm sugar, salt, sweet soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Mix well to coat the tofu evenly with the sauces and seasonings.
  4. Finish the Dish:

    • Add the chopped green onion to the pan. Stir everything together and cook for another minute, allowing the flavors to meld. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding optional seasoning powder if desired.
  5. Serve:

    • Transfer the Tahu Saus Tiram to a serving dish. Enjoy this savory tofu dish with steamed rice or as a flavorful side.
